Hydration & Restroom Pitstop Index

Find public drinking fountains, water refill stations, and clean restrooms along any route — with live distances and crowdsourced status. Running, cycling, walking.

Find public drinking fountains, water refill stations, and clean restrooms along any running, cycling, or walking route — with live distances and crowdsourced status. No sign-up, no app install, just a map you can plan around.

The tool runs entirely in your browser

Hydropitstop uses OpenStreetMap data, OSRM routing, and the Overpass API. All status reports live in your browser's local storage. Your pitstop list is built up from fellow users of the same URL.

How it works

The tool is straightforward to use:

  1. You enter a start point and a destination.
  2. Hydropitstop calculates a walking, cycling, or running route between them using OSRM, an open-source routing engine that routes over OpenStreetMap data.
  3. The tool scans a ~2 km buffer along that route using the Overpass API, querying for amenity=drinking_water and amenity=toilets. Every facility near the path shows with its distance from your route.
  4. Every pitstop has a status you can read and update. No account needed — just click Working, Out of Order, or Clean.

Distance matters: every pitstop is measured against your actual route, not just drawn arbitrarily on the map. You can see how far you have to detour to reach a fountain or restroom.

Live distance calculations and zero-login status updates

Hydropitstop is designed around two key features:

Live distance calculations

Every pitstop is measured against your actual route. You can see how far you have to detour to reach a fountain or restroom, which makes it easier to judge whether a stop is worth leaving your line for — especially useful in the last miles of a long run or on a ride with a tight schedule.

Zero-login crowdsourced status

For each facility you can flip a status toggle: Working, Out of Order, or Clean. No account, no email, no log-in required — anyone can update a status in a couple of taps. If a fountain you passed is dry, mark it Out of Order so the next runner does not waste the detour.

Who this is for

🏃

Long-distance runners

Hydration is the difference between a good training run and a bad one. Runners can plot a route and see exactly where the next fountain or refill station falls, and distance the gaps between water stops instead of guessing.

🚲

City cyclists

A cycle commute rarely has obvious pitstops. Cyclists can check where refill stations and restrooms sit along their usual route, and confirm a fountain is actually working before they rely on it.

👶

Parents with young children

Travel with small children changes the priorities of a route. Parents can map restrooms and water stops ahead of time, so a day out is planned around when and where the family can stop.

🚶

Outdoor exercisers

Walkers, joggers, and trail users can use the tool to map loops and out-and-backs around known water and restroom points, keeping long sessions self-sufficient.

🗺️

Tourists and travellers

In an unfamiliar city, finding a clean public restroom or a safe tap for a refill bottle can be the difference between a good day and a bad one. Travellers can scout water and facilities along their walking route before they set out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this confirm a facility is actually open, clean, or working?

No. This tool shows map locations and user-submitted statuses. It does not verify that a restroom is open, clean, safe, or accessible when you arrive, and a facility can close or change without notice. Always confirm critical needs independently.

How current is the map data?

As current as OpenStreetMap. Because the underlying map is maintained by volunteers, some facilities may be new, moved, or removed and the map may not have caught up. Coverage and freshness vary by area.

How current are the user status reports?

Statuses reflect what contributors reported most recently. A status is a snapshot at the time it was set; a fountain marked Working could be Out of Order a day later, and a facility may have no report at all. Use statuses as a helpful signal, not a guarantee.

Do I have to sign in to update a status?

No. Status updates require no account, no email, and no log-in. You can update a facility in a couple of taps.

Does it work worldwide?

The tool queries global OpenStreetMap data, so it works wherever the map has coverage. That said, results are only as rich as the local map data: some regions have dense coverage of fountains and toilets, while others have sparse or missing entries.

Can I contribute missing fountains or restrooms?

The underlying map is improved directly through OpenStreetMap. If you know of a fountain or restroom that is missing, you can add it to OpenStreetMap itself, and it will appear here once the map is updated.

Is my location or my route stored anywhere?

The tool runs in the browser and does not require creating an account. Your route and searches are not tied to a personal profile on this site.
